Laptop Tips & Tricks

Below is a list of common mistakes people make with laptops, please take the time to read them and familiarize yourself with them. They will save you money in the life of your laptop.

TIPS

 Always keep Laptops off floor
While on the floor laptops are easily stepped on, pets tend to use them for toys and small children will play with them.
 Always use a surge protector
A power surge can happen at anytime, anywhere and ultimately destroy your laptop.
Don't keep paper work in between screen and keypad.
Paper can scratch the screen leaving a costly bill to have it replaced.
Never leave your laptop in a cold environment.
When you bring your laptop into a warm place condensation will form and may cause electrical shocks throughout your laptop. Also if you turn it on while it's still cold this can lead to overloading.
Don't place your laptop on soft surfaces.
This will block off air vents and overheat your laptop.
Don't drop it while your carrying it.
A good leather case with separate compartments is the safest way to carry your laptop. Make sure the case has separate compartments for add-ons this will avoid scratches over your laptop.
Never drink coffee or any liquid around your laptop.
It has been proven that laptops don't like liquids .
Lastly never try to fix your laptop yourself
Laptops have many small parts that can easily be broken, misplaced and shocked. Leave it to the professionals, leave it to Laptop Repairs!

Battery Dont's
Do not short-circuit a battery. A short-circuit may cause severe damage to the battery.

Do not drop, hit or otherwise abuse the battery as this may result in the exposure of the cell contents, which are corrosive.

Do not expose the battery to moisture or rain.

Keep battery away from fire or other sources of extreme heat. Do not incinerate. Exposure of battery to extreme heat may result in an explosion.

Digital Phone Systems
Digital lines can pass along electrical current even without an active connection. Eliminate potential damage to your PC Card or built-in modem by unplugging from hotel lines whenever you’re not on line.

High currents on digital lines can fry many PC Card modems. Don’t connect unless you’re sure the line is analog. If you’re a frequent traveler, consider investing in a digital-compatible modem or coupler that will ensure you can always connect.

Finding Hard to Find Drivers

Use the FCC ID code on the back of the part to identify the manufacturer. Got to http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/ and do a search!

Forgot your printer?

If you forgot your printer while traveling, just fax yourself at the hotel you are staying. The quality may not be that great but it can get the job done nontheless.

Get more battery life with Windows 98

Switch to Windows 98 The best Windows for travelers is Windows 98, which has the latest power-management options for notebooks. It reduces the drain of power-hogging components until they're really needed. Don't choose Windows NT 4 Workstation, which has limited power-saving options.

Get more space by cleaning cache
Megabytes of data can build up in the cache directory of your laptop's Web browser. Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator both feature push-button methods of flushing the cache. In Navigator, select Options/Network Options, then click on the Cache tab. Click on the "Clear disk cache now" button. In IE, select View/Options, then click on the Advanced tab. Click the button labeled Settings under "Temporary Internet files," then click on the "Empty folder" button.
Have you ever gotten stuck downloading a large e-mail with attachments while on the road using a dial-up connection?
If your company uses Exchange Server and Outlook 98 or Outlook 2000, you can create a folder for large files on the Exchange Server, and then create a rule that automatically moves files over a certain size out of your inbox and into the folder for large files. Make sure this folder is not marked for synchronization. This way you won't waste your time downloading large files and you can read them when you are back in the office with a faster connection.
How to maximise the life of your batteries
For any new battery, charge and discharge it at least 3 times.

Store spare battery packs in a cool dry place, out of direct sunlight.

Remove the battery pack if you don't plan to use your notebook for an extended period of time.

Unplug the AC adapter when the battery is fully charged, as overcharging can shorten the life of the battery.

Laptop heating solution
Keep your laptop on a hard flat surface for even cooling of the processor and internals
Line Tester

Frequent laptop travelers should consider investing in a modem saver/line tester. Using this device on a phone line you have not used previously can save you the cost and hassle of replacing a modem damaged by a bad line.

Sew a bright patch on your laptop bag

Good for when traveling and perhaps your laptop is stolen. It's easier to spot.

The Standby option is missing on my laptop.
If your portable has full Advanced Power Management (or APM) but does not have a battery in it then standby will not be available. Options to hibernate and power-off will still be available however. This is be design and is caused by the standby vector in Ntapm.sys is disabled on any computer that does not have a battery.
If you do have a battery and you don't have the option it may be your computer is not APM compliant or it is not correctly configured. Check with the computer manufacturer.
